Lozziworm, 1972 Utility playground stabile as a multiple
When I was prompted by architect Hans Litz of Benglen to design a recreational sculpture,
I looked for a way to construct a reconfigurable playground stabile using a limited number
of simple elements. The assembled sculpture was to encourage children in their playtime
activities and, at the same time, have a recognisable form. |
After many fruitless
attempts I finally found an extremely simple solution for which only two basic elements
would be needed; one a straight length of thick-walled, 90-centimetre polyester pipe and
the other a matching elbow. An opening of about 50 cm diameter in the wall of the straight
element was to be provided.
A virtually unlimited number of attractive configurations could now be constructed
by using a minimum of 19 of these basic elements, colour-matched and connected with
coupling rings. Göhner AG made the creation of the first Lozziworm possible by sponsoring
the manufacture of the costly moulding equipment.
